EU Support for Youth Community Activities
In January 2023, IOM North Macedonia with the support of the European Union implemented a social cohesion initiative in the Municipality of Butel. This initiative gathered a number of youth, which were invited into two community dialogues organized and facilitated by IOM North Macedonia.
During the first community dialogue, youth were presented with the objective of the initiative and technicalities of the application process. Moreover, youth were challenged to discuss their initial thoughts in relation to the needs in their community. During the second community dialogue, which took place approximately two weeks after the first dialogue, the youth presented the need to enhance the outdoor sports areas. There were two main areas in Butel, one in a public park and the other in the Economic and Law Secondary School "Arsen Jovkov" that could be used for outdoor sports but had no sports requisites in any of these two places. After a thorough discussion and analysis, the group came up to a conclusion that equipping outdoor area in the high schools is more feasible due to sustainability, safety and maintenance of the sports equipment.
After the application process was finalized, the outdoor space for sports activities in the Economic and Law Secondary School "Arsen Jovkov" was equipped with sports requisites. The main objective of this youth-led initiative was to secure sports equipment for youth in the community, including a football goal, basketball, lights and a water fountain.
In addition to the main objective, this initiative aimed to encourage the youth to be more engaged and participate in sports and outdoor activities to increase their physical activity and social well-being, including interaction with the environment.
